Temple (Tem) Caldwell Hager, Sr.

Tem passed away on February 17, 2012, at the age of 71 at his home in Panama City, Florida. Tem was the youngest child of Marjorie and Richard D. Hager, Sr. of Winston- Salem, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Richard D. Hager, II. Tem is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Pat Farley Hager. Children, from a previous marriage, son, Temple C. Hager, Jr. (Kim) of Houston, TX and daughter, Holly Hager Von Gunten (Nick) of Germantown, TN, Grandchildren Ethan and Ava Von Gunten of Germantown, TN and nephew, Edward Hager of Trinidad, CO. Tem was born in Atlanta, GA and lived in Winston-Salem, NC until his senior year in high school and graduated from Coral Gables High School (Florida) in 1958. Tem came from a family who instilled a love of airplanes and flying in him. He wanted to pursue a flying career and in 1960, graduated from Embry Riddle Flight School in Miami, FL. For a short time after graduation he flew as a corporate pilot for Eastman Kodak in Bristol, TN. In 1960, his commercial career began as a pilot with Southern Airways which subsequently became Republic Airlines and Northwest Airlines. After 36 years as a commercial pilot, Tem retired from Northwest as a DC-10 Captain in 1997. Tem loved life and never met a stranger. Retirement kept him busy with life on the beach, ham radio (WD4FGR), golfing, boating, fishing, evenings with friends and traveling to the cabin in Virginia during the summer to watch the river flow past their cabin. Tem loved his and Pat's many cruise vacations over the past three years. Interment of ashes will be at Glenwood Cemetery in Bristol, TN, at a future date, at that time a celebration of life will take place with family and friends.
