Donald Earl Elkins, 83, of Woodstock, Georgia passed from this earthly life on November 25, 2021. He was born on February 28th,1938 to Earl and Britte Elkins of Twin City, Georgia, where he was raised and attended Emanuel County Institute. He met and married Barbara Bailiff Elkins on June 1st, 1963 in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Don and Barbara were married for 40 years and were blessed with four daughters. In 2003, Don lost his beloved Barbara after a long battle with cancer but was blessed to marry Peggy Popwell on February 14, 2007. Peggy was an amazing caregiver and companion for Don for the remaining 14 years of his life.
Don, also lovingly known as “Papa” will be remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend who deeply loved his family and had a fun-loving spirit. He enjoyed a successful 42-year career in the airline industry which fostered a love for travel and culture. One of his favorite things to do was reminisce about past travels and plan the next one! He was a kind-hearted person who loved to give thoughtful gifts to others. Always passionate about Georgia Tech football, he spent many years attending games and following the Yellow Jackets. As a young man, he served in the United States Army from 1957-1960 and remained fiercely patriotic. Donald loved the Lord and worked diligently to provide his girls a Christian education. Over 40 years of his life was spent in the community of Smyrna, Georgia, where he attended church and raised his family.
Those who mourn his passing include his wife, Peggy Popwell Elkins, four daughters - Angela Elkins Parker (Blake), Kim Elkins Warren (Allen), Karen Elkins Connelly, Sharon Elkins Pitts (Jeff), along with 12 Grandchildren, John Blake, Grant, Hudson, and Halle Parker, Presley and Luke Field, Katie, Reese, and Georgia Connelly, and Grayson, Carly, and Alden Pitts. In addition, two stepsons - Andy Popwell (Kim) and Rick Popwell (Angie), and 3 step-grandchildren, Tiffany, Meagan and Lindsey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Barbara Bailiff Elkins, and a sister Linda Elkins Slawson.
A graveside service will be held at Cheatham Hill Memorial Park, 1861 Dallas Highway, Marietta, Georgia on Tuesday, November 30th at 1:00 pm. Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta is in charge of the arrangements. www.carmichaelcares.com, 770-424-4924
